Following morning worship on Sunday 30 April 2017, JUC celebrated the recent 90th birthday of one of its longest serving members, Helen Hay. Helen has been a member of JUC and its predecessor, the Johnsonville Methodist Church for 60 years.

The celebration was led by Helen's Family Group, "The Young and the Rest of Us".   Graham Cochrane compiled a powerpoint presentation featuring photos of Helen at family group events.   Y&TRoU family group member Debbie Player spoke of Helen's extensive contributions to Parish life and the wider J'Vlle community over the years including:

  • Serving on Parish Council several times over many years:
  • Being a member of the Management Committee of the Johnsonville Community Centre
  • Strongly supporting Church Union in the 1960s and 1970s
  • Volunteer in the office of the Uniting Churches of Aotearoa
  • Representative on the Methodist Stationing Committee
  • Secretary of the Methodist Synod
  • Regional Representative on the Joint Regional Committee (JRC)
  • Key JUC member with the Op Shop
  • Coordinator of Care and Craft
  • Meals on Wheels "Checker"
  • 17 years with the family group

Helen was one of the first members of the community to receive a Northern Suburbs Community Volunteer Award and in 2012 was awarded a QSM.    Well done Helen!

The congregation adjourned to the Church Lounge for a morning tea and customary blowing the candles on a birthday cake.
