Tenth Anniversary of St Oswald Merger with JUC

Members of the former St Oswald's Parish celebrate the 10th anniversary of merging with JUC

A communion service was held at the Terrace Centre of the Johnsonville Uniting Church on Sunday 9 February 2014 to mark the 10th anniversary of the merging of the St Oswald's parish of Newlands/Paparangi with Johnsonville Uniting.  Speaking on behalf of the former congregation of St Oswald's, Robin Dunlop said the merger proposal had come about quite naturally when it became clear that the parish with an income of just $30K to $37K per annum was not viable.  A number of long serving active members left the district and the Rev Barry Jones had signalled his intention to retire at Christmas 2003.  St Oswald's was a very special parish with a strong sense of community.  Graham Cochrane, who was JUC's Parish Council Secretary at the time remembers the merger proposal being achieved harmoniously and within a very short timeframe.  "Everything that could have gone wrong didn't go wrong", said Graham.

The Rev Barry Jones preached at the anniversary service on the subject of "salt and light", reminding those present of the special role Christians have played and continue to play in bringing social justice to the communities in which they live.  Barry then joined Rev Anna Gilkison in administering communion to the congregation of around 80 people.   The service was followed by morning tea and a barbecue lunch.
